What Are 35pt Toploaders? Card Thickness Guide
A clear guide to standard card thickness, correct sleeving and safe rigid storage.
“35pt” describes the approximate card thickness a toploader is designed to accommodate. It is a common format for standard-thickness TCG and sports cards. The number does not describe the outside dimensions of the holder, and it does not mean that every card—especially relic, patch or premium stock cards—will fit.
Why use a rigid toploader?
A soft sleeve helps protect the surface, but it provides limited structural support. A rigid toploader adds resistance to bending and corner impact during storage, sorting or careful transport. It is especially useful for individual cards that are stored separately from a complete binder set.

How to insert a card safely
Sleeve the card first
Use a clean, compatible soft sleeve to prevent direct contact between the card surface and rigid plastic.
Open the toploader gently
Hold it upright and create only enough space for insertion. Do not pull the sides excessively.
Guide the sleeved card evenly
Support the sleeve and lower it without pressing directly on the card’s top edge.
Check the final position
The card should sit flat. If it bows, catches or requires force, remove it and verify thickness and sleeve size.
Cards that may need a thicker holder
Memorabilia, patch, jersey, embossed and unusually thick premium cards may exceed 35pt. Do not judge thickness only by looking at the front. When uncertain, check the card manufacturer’s specification or use a card-thickness gauge.
How to store toploaders
Keep rigid holders upright in a correctly sized box with enough support to prevent leaning. Avoid rubber bands, heavy stacks and direct sunlight. For transport, use a container that limits movement without squeezing the holders.
